A Schengen visa checklist can feel like a long list of paperwork with no clear reason behind it. In reality, each document is there to answer a specific question a visa officer needs answered. Understanding the "why" helps you put together a stronger, more consistent application.
Your passport needs to be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years, and have at least 2 blank pages. This confirms you have a valid, unexpired travel document with room for a visa sticker and entry/exit stamps.
Schengen rules require medical insurance with at least €30,000 of coverage, valid across the whole Schengen area, for your full stay. This demonstrates that a medical emergency won't become the host country's financial burden.
Bank statements and, where relevant, sponsor letters demonstrate you have enough money to cover accommodation, food, transport and incidentals for your trip without needing to work.
